Asus Vivobook X505
Asus Vivobook X505 offers good performance for the price. There is a live performance in it which is good for watching films but the photo is ineligible for editing. The display is clearly good for using office applications, but games like Photoshop or Doom do not run on this laptop. This machine is very suitable for those who need a portable machine for work and they do not want to spend much on this, but if you take more than the power consumers, then there are better machines.
VivoBook X505ZA Design and Build
In recent years, Asus has made itself a name for making the most stylish laptop in the market in all price categories. With VivoBook X505ZA, things are not different. The most eye-catching element of this laptop is its premium-looking faux brush finish, which is aluminum finish on the lid. Whether it is gray or gold, the laptop definitely stole the eye. The lid is made of plastic and should hold well against daily misbehavior in the long run. Without hurting your nails, there is a small lip on the edge to help lift the lid easily – this is a smart touch.
However, I wish I could say all the praise about the interior and the bottom. Being cheap means that in some places, Asus cut the corners with cleverly balanced bits with a few bits. It is good to see the screen with narrow bezels, but the plastic used for the display frame is not of high quality. Similarly, the palm posture and base is also made of high-quality polycarbonate material, in which the trademark Asus is a mixture of brushed metal finishes and impure speaker grill design.
But keyboard keys carry any plastic from display beams, which is not a pleasure to experience for a longer period of time. Below are very rugged plastic finish, so that heat vents and speakers are held. Thankfully, most of the time remains out of sight for the most part. The widespread use of plastic for the chassis means that VivoBook with its weight of 1.6 kg is very light to carry X505ZA round.
Altogether, the VivoBook X505ZA has been made decently for its price, but this time my expectations from Asus were high.
VivoBook X505ZA connectivity
The VivoBook X505ZA follows the modern trend of leaving a DVD drive, but Asus has compensated it by offering most other port for it. Two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, a USB-C 3.1 (Gen 1) port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio output jack. A Kensington lock rests along with the ports.
VivoBook X505ZA display
Asus is known for displaying it in the display department. With VivoBook X505ZA, they have partially acquired it. The display is bigger – it measures 15.6 inches diagonally. However, with narrow bezels, Asus can make the laptop a little more compact. The panel is LCD and presents images at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The fresh rate is at 60 Hz – nothing here. However, the anti-glare coating is a bon.
The panel can only represent 45 percent of NTSC color gamut. Therefore, whether you are watching movies or browsing the web, you will not be able to see the exact color most of the time. Most of the time, the colors are dull and the level of glow is average, making it difficult to use outside. As soon as you bend the lid or look at the angle, the panel changes colors on a large scale.
In short, the display is good for solo use only on the move and it would be wise to plug it in an external display.
VivoBook X505ZA specifications and enforced
So far, VivoBook X505ZA has taken shape in the form of an average laptop. However, when you ask it to do some real work, it redefines itself. Under the undesirable plastic build, AMD has a Ryzen 5-2500U processor that has been seen up to 3.6GHz. The processor is kept with 2MB of cache memory. For the help of graphics, Asus has added AMD’s Vegas 8 graphics to 1GB VRAM. The top end version I was testing included 8GB RAM and 1TB SATA HDD. Asus Vivo Buk X505ZA provides with a real copy of Windows 10.
With a medium containing powerful specialties, I was expecting a fairly average performance. However, new mobile chips from AMD do a serious punch pack. A laptop was able to manage most of what I threw in as a casual user. Working on a long term document with multiple tabs of Chrome browser open in the background was not annoying for the VivoBook X505ZA. The hardware is capable of managing heavy loads of Windows 10 and ensures that the lag-free user experience is most often distributed.
Since I’m addicted to gaming, I decided to throw some graphics-intensive games in the fun VivoBook X505ZA. But this laptop took it as a gaming laptop. I have managed an average of 30 fps at Fortnite in the medium graphics setting for at least an hour. I have been able to play Codemasters F1 2017 in 30 different mediums for 30 hours and not notice any hiccup for 3 hours. There was no noticeable thermal throttling and heat management was also very efficient. Note that I chose my game keeping in limited 1GB video memory in mind.
However, I wanted to do a bit more work on the Asus Audio Department. A pair of a 5W speaker is located below the laptop. Like all Downward Facing Speakers, set up on VivoBook X505ZA suffers from muffling audio when placed on a bed or lap. However, the audio quality is decent and is quite loud for the outside. There is no bass, but high and maids can be easily carried out. Asus’s Audio Wizard app can help to an extent with audio tuning.
VivoBook X505ZA battery
The VivoBook X505ZA itself is alive with a non-detachable 3-cell 45WHr battery. The unit is quite average and for its best management, to provide up to 4 hours of stamina. This battery stamina figure is the result of continuous work on a one-word document and five Chrome tabs opened in the background, one of which is streaming music. When the brightness diminishes, this figure can be high and if you switch to power saving mode, dial the usage down. With the presence of 45W Fast Charging, the laptop can be kept above 10 percent in approximately 2 hours.
